This editorial project fully reprints Germano Celant’s article published in the first issue of Data magazine in September 1971, considered the first attempt to catalogue Books as Artworks and a foundational text in the definition of the artist’s book. The edition is conceived as an essential and rigorous typographic object: the cover is embossed using movable type, evoking the manual quality and physical presence of artist publishing. The interior pages are divided horizontally: the upper section features Celant’s original article, while the lower half is dedicated to the bibliography he compiled, presented prominently to highlight the depth of his research.A second bibliography follows the original one, listing the artist’s books and texts mentioned in the article but not included in the initial bibliography—an editorial addition meant to enhance the text and provide an expanded tool for study.
Through this dual structure and a typographic layout that reveals the layering of content, the book invites the reader to a simultaneous and attentive reading experience, where theory and documentation reflect one another.
